Long-term, heavy
use of alcohol can
lead to addiction
(alcoholism).
Sudden cessation
of long term,
extensive alcohol
intake is likely
to produce
withdrawal
symptoms,
including severe
anxiety, tremors,
hallucinations,
convulsions and
even death.
Alcoholism runs
in families; thus,
children of
alcoholics face
increased risk of alcoholism and
associated brain
changes.
Ecstasy causes
long-lasting,
possibly
permanent, damage
to nerve
endings in the
brain that are
critical for thought
and memory.
It impairs the
function and long
term production
of serotonin,
a brain chemical
which plays
a major role in
regulating mood,
short and long
term memory,
sleep & appetite.
Each year more
than 100,000 U.S.
deaths are caused
by excessive
alcohol
consumption.
Direct and indirect
causes of death
include drunk
driving, cirrhosis
of the liver, falls,
cancer and stroke.
Marijuana abuse
is associated with
many detrimental
health affects.
These effects can
include frequent
respioratory
infections,
impaired memory
and learning,
increased heart
rate, anxiety and
panic attacks.

Nearly 14 million
Americans meet
the diagnostic
criteria for alcohol
use disorder.
Mothers who
drink alcohol
during pregnancy
may give birth to
infants with fetal
alcohol syndrome.
These infants
may suffer from
mental retardation
and other
irreversible
physical
abnormalities.
Long term effects
of consuming
large amounts of
alcohol can lead to
permanent
damage to vital
organs, lowered
resistance to
disease, several
types of cancer
and high blood
pressure.
Higher doses of
ecstasy can cause
severe breathing
problems, coma,
or even death.
